It looks like Bella Vista is going to trade a one story garage for a new residential building. The garage at 825-831 Bainbridge Street isn’t your typical auto garage, though. It has been the home to Meg Saligman Studio – a maker of murals and public art. You’ve likely seen a bunch of Meg Saligman’s murals across Philadelphia. One of her most famous murals was actually painted on the Bainbridge Street facade of her studio. Remember the mural of that bald eagle gripping Tom Brady in its talons? That image formerly graced the walls of 825 Bainbridge Street.
Well, the Eagles mural has been gone for a couple of years and the building will disappear soon as well. In its place, a 4-story building with 15 residential units, 5 bicycle stalls, and a roof deck will rise. The project is utilizing the green roof bonus to attain 3 additional residential units.
Ambit Architecture, who always does quality work, did the design work for this project. The building will have an angled roof line and will be clad in red brick. Many of the residential units will have private decks and it looks like there will be a backyard space for residents as well.
We’re happy to see 15 more homes planned in such a desirable section of Philadelphia. And although we loved the murals on the old garage, we think that the new building will be much more architecturally pleasing than the existing structure.
How do you feel about this project?
