Take a walk through Fishtown and it will seem like there’s some kind of construction happening on every other block. Frankford Avenue has transformed into one of the best commercial corridors in Philadelphia over the last ten years with many more projects in the pipeline that will help to continue to improve the area.

Just off of Frankford Avenue, at the corner of Belgrade and Oxford Streets, a significant multifamily project is underway that will add residential density just off the thoroughfare. Back in mid 2020, developers were granted a variance to construct an apartment building on an oddly shaped RSA-5 parcel at 1408 Oxford Street that formerly held a low-rise warehouse.

The warehouse was demolished last year. Construction followed shortly thereafter and the steel pedestal is now rising out of the ground. When completed, this will be a 5-story building with 42 residential units, 34 automobile parking spaces, 20 bicycle stalls, a rooftop deck, and a rooftop pool. The parking entrance will be located on Belgrade Street. There will be a boutique public park located on the corner of Belgrade and Oxford Streets

The tasteful design was created by Ambit Architecture. The renderings depict the facade being constructed out of beige brick with large windows accenting the masonry. The building will be called the National Metalcrafters building – named after the company that used to occupy the property.

This project should be a big positive for the area. The new residents that it attracts should help fuel the businesses just steps away on Frankford Avenue and lead to more businesses opening in the neighborhood.

How do you feel about this project? Would you like to live here and have access to the rooftop pool?
